Tennessee Walking Horse enthusiast and longtime industry supporter Dr. Warren Gill has released a new novel titled Solomon, a story that blends his lifelong passion for Walking Horses with science, imagination and heart.
Gill, who grew up deeply rooted in the Walking Horse industry, spent much of his youth riding, training, breeding and showing horses. His grandfather, Warren Gill, Sr., served as President of TWHBEA in 1965-66. Although Gill once dreamed of becoming a Grand Championship-winning trainer at the Celebration, his professional path led him to a distinguished career in education, including service at the University of Tennessee and Middle Tennessee State University.
Now retired, Gill has turned his focus to writing, with horses — especially Tennessee Walking Horses — as his favorite subject.
Solomon tells the story of Barbara Dickerson, a University of Tennessee graduate student who meets the eccentric but brilliant retired animal science professor, Doc Grand. On Doc’s farm, she encounters Solomon, a striking bay Tennessee Walking Horse stallion with an extraordinary gift: the ability to think — and communicate — in remarkable ways. Bred by Doc and enhanced through advanced research in animal intelligence, molecular genetics and a touch of AI, Solomon is no ordinary horse.
As Doc’s health declines and his research faces an uncertain future, Barb and Solomon devise an ambitious plan to save the farm and preserve Doc’s life’s work — by enlisting a local riding legend to show Solomon in the World’s Grand Championship. What follows is a compelling journey where science, determination and the spirit of a Walking Horse take center stage.
Gill was raised on his family’s farm near Petersburg, Tennessee, where he currently farms with his brother and sister. He holds a doctorate in animal science and joined Middle Tennessee State University as Professor of Animal Science and Department Chair in 2007 after a 25-year career with the Extension Service at the University of Tennessee and the University of Kentucky. In retirement, he remains active in his community, serving as President of the Petersburg Community Cultural Coalition, as a member of the Petersburg Lion’s Club, and leading restoration efforts of the historic Morgan School for Boys building.
In addition to Solomon, Gill is the author of Cane Creek Days and Princess of Horses. His books are available through Amazon, other online booksellers, and at www.warrengillbooks.com.
For readers who love horses — and especially Tennessee Walking Horses — Solomon offers a unique and imaginative ride.
