Blood Typing Phase Out Reminder

Lewisburg, TN - The Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ And Exhibitors’ Association (TWHBEA) reminds all Tennessee Walking Horse owners and breeders that parentage verification via blood typing is being phased out. The ability to conduct any blood typing transactions through the Association, at specially negotiated TWHBEA rates, will end on December 31, 2012. As of January 1, 2013, those wishing to blood type their horses and those that still have red top tubes for DNA conversion, will need to make individual arrangements with the lab.

The lab at the University of Kentucky will process all blood samples that arrive at the lab before December 7, 2012, by January 1, 2013. Those arriving between December 7, 2012, and December 31, 2012, will be processed after the University Christmas break. Any samples postmarked by December 31, 2012, will be processed at the negotiated TWHBEA rate.

After January 1, 2013, the University of Kentucky will only be conducting blood typing twice a year, once in April and again in November. The cost for the service will be $100. Red top tubes, which require conversion to DNA, will be run once a month at a cost of $80 per sample.
